TOPIC: Expanded menu items

A few of my menu items have sub-menus.
When editing these menus, at the bottom of "menu settings" is a line that says; "You may also edit the advanced settings for this menu item." There I set for the menu not to be expanded. I can't find a place to do this for the Image galleries. Do they have to be expanded all the time?
(The reason I would like them not to be expanded is so the navigation column doesn't look so large. I figure visitors are more likely to brows the navigation column if it isn't as long as my arm. Faulty or good reasoning?)
