While I've seen and heard of more lawsuits in California with inspectors involved than other states, they are almost always settled out of court. Even if the inspector isn't at fault, your E & O insurance would rather settle than spend the money on an actual trial. Many of the cases are also between the buyer & seller or another party and the inspector just gets dragged in.

That being said, I still agree with the more tools you have, the better. Just know how to use them!
