Last year was my first year as inspector but I had more inspections then than I am getting this year.  In the mean time I have been taking on some construction work. Now what is happening is my construction is taking off to the point that I am considering concentrating on it and dropping inspecting altogether.  Hard decision though.  I am swaying between two thoughts; "if I stop the inspection business I am being a quitter" and "If construction is taking off like this, maybe this is where I am being led on purpose. Making a living is important."

Have you considered hiring someone to fill in and perform inspections when you're busy? It can never hurt to have two businesses going if you can handle it!

Thanks for that thought Dominic.  It did occur to me for a fleeting moment but I have not given it a lot of serious thought.  Not sure how to structure it.  Are you thinking to pass inspections over to another inspection company at times or hiring an inspector on staff?
Maybe I should hire an inspector who can also do construction.  May have the best of both worlds then.

You could pass inspections on to another inspector and give him 75% of the cost of the inspection is he's covering his own E&O. Or cover it yourself and give them a bit less.

If you do 100 inspections a year, that leaves 265 days a year to do construction as well as the partial days prior to or after the inspection.  If you like them both, make it work.

There is nothing sweeter than the smell of fresh cut grass on a baseball infield, the click of a wooden bat and the taste of a hot dog at a warm sunny daytime double-header.
