TOPIC: Redirect Virus

Redirect Virus 13 years 7 months ago #35984

How do I get rid of this thing.
It started a few days ago..... redirects internet searches to shopping or other sites, not what I'm looking for.

I did try Dom's suggestion, made in the hijack thread (spybot) but when I downloaded it from C-Net the program would not install.

Any ideas?

Cheers

I'm not sure, but this may be good info.  We tried to install an antivirus (Trend Micro) on the CTL 2 go and it would not work. I contacted their customer service department and it ended up that we had a virus.  Their IT department connected to the CTL 2 go and cleaned up the virus and put on the life time protection and 1 year Customer Service Support. It cost $167.00.

You'll need to save AVG & Spybot installers to a flash drive. Reboot in safe mode (hit F8 right before the windows screen pops up), then install and run both programs in safe mode. Most viruses will prevent new virus programs from being installed.

That didn't work either.
I downloaded AVG and Spybot to a flash drive from my laptop.

Booted the desktop in safe mode with networking

Attempted to install spybot and got a message

"The server name and or address could not be resolved" :(

AVG would not install either Message "requires internet connectivity........ >:(

I was able to get to the internet in safe mode.

Now what?

Just an update for the curious ones out there.

Apparently the only way to get rid of this bug is to do a complete back-up, wipe the Hd and make a clean install of XP and try to get everything back the way it was.

BTW install an anti virus program before you restore the data, cause the back-up will save the bugs too.

The place where I took the computer gave me a free one year subscription to McAffee.  It picked up two Trojans as the data restore was progressing.
