Joe, other than providing a nesting ground for Birds, that flashing is wrong. I would have to see what the roof covering is. It does not appear to be roof shingles, where step flashing would have been required. If it is a metal roof, it is still wrong.  :)

How can you tell from that picture that it is wrong?  If it is a shingled roof, it needs step flashing under it and the visible part would be the cap flashing.  If it is a metal roof, the roofing material would need to be wrapped up the chimney and the visible part would be the cap flashing.  For a cap flashing, it looks like a job well done.

Joe

Marcel is the roofing expert as he guided me through the master shingle applicator course.

The flashing at the chimney looks OK, I can not tell on the other as I can not see the roof.

Strange how the words are jumping around. I am far from a computer expert but I would run some disk clean up programs and then close and restart the computer. If it did not resolve I would contact a computer professional.

Thanx David, actually it was letters jumping around as I typed each. Is it called the cursor that the letters follow, that's what would jump as I typed each letter. It was weird as ----.  It's fine today. It's happened before but not as bad as last nite. I guess I'm banging or dropping my lap top to much. :). I knew you had taken the Master shingle applicator course a while back. That's why I was refering to you and Marcel as the roofing experts. I remember ya'll talking about it. You're being modest in your assesment above, I remember in a lot of roof threads you were knowledgeable. I think you even cleared up something for me once on slate roofs.
David, in your last sentence you definetly sound like an inspector, "If it did not resolve I would contact a computer professional" I bet you wanted to say structural engineer didn't you. LOL

Marcel, it is dimensional comp shingle on the roof in the pic. It didn't appear to be step flashed at slope or counterflashed at back wall.
But as far as flashing at shingles to siding goes we only use full lenghts of 3x5 flashing here. Step flashing was only done w/ masonry as I thought should have been done on the (new)house in the pic. Now supposedly this is how volume builders around here are doing it and getting away w/it. This home was city inspected. I was there for a warranty insp after movein. The people only waited a month instead of year ending for the warranty inspection, due to concerns. I'll post some more pics of same house.
As far as the flashing at masonry is concerned I'm sure the builders went to the local city jurisdictions to have this method approved. Once they get it thru San Antonio, the smaller cities follow suit. This was in a smaller surrounding city. I was told to not go there by a knowledgable source when i was going to represent that this flashing was wrong. Which could only mean if the city approves it who cares what others say.

Here's a pic of house. The area over the garage is what was pictured in previous post. The wall on slope in previous pic was actually not chimney as can be seen in this pic.
Next pic is decking not cut out properly for ridge vent
3rd pic -siding not off roof 1-2".

1st pic- check out trim at second story overhang !! also has large opening in soffit to attic. I guess it makes up for ridge vent not cut out.  ;D
2- shingle roofing edge
Here's a new one- access to framed wall from under siding
last pic font porch out of square

Bert, it is a comp shingle roof in that pic.(new house) It appears that the flashing installed is just a 3x5 full lenght w/ bent lip on top which is in the saw cut of the brick and caulked. Apparently w/ local jurisdictions this is passing around here w/ masonry. 3x5 full lenghts w/ siding has always been approved here. I don't think I have ever seen step flashing w/ siding. Obviously weather conditions are different here than your area or Marcels and Davids. (Just a little)  :D
