TOPIC: Mositure Meters

Re: Mositure Meters 14 years 11 months ago #10689

If you guys aren't using a moisture meter daily, I certainly hope you've got IR cameras in your tool boxes.  I use my meter non-stop.  Every kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet, off every toilet, tub/shower legs, interior wall and base boards off faulty grade or flat work elevations, off central air units, water heaters, etc...

I found a 12' LF wall segment today that was dry to the touch, but tested positive for excessive moisture readings when I put the meter on it.  I was simply testing a discolored stucco area from sprinkler spray and bingo!  They're having the mold guy out tomorrow.

Be careful out there gentlemen....

Karma for you Will. A moisture meter is a necessity and should be used on every inspection we perform, IMO. For me, there is no reason NOT to get your meter out every time you go on an inspection.

Will - I use the exact same meter and have had it for years.  I too have dropped it a few times, but never until now considered recalibration.  I have not noticed that it registers funny.

I also use it every inspection.  It is a very valuable too.  I remember when they first came out and the debate was that if it didn't have probes it wouldn't work.  Now most people have them for every inspection.

Update:

I have IR also, but for now the moisture meter is the everyday tool.  Some home inspectors now debate the benefits of an IR camera.  One day the IR camera will become an everyday tool too.

Wat and see...    ;)

I use a GE Aguant. It is non distructive unit with no tips. I use it every day on everything. The other day I was doing a builder warranty home and notice very slight staining on the trim in the master closet. There was tiled shower on the other side of the wall. All faucet connections were on the oppisite wall, so I flood tested the shower and had a lot of moisture in that closet wall. Moisture meters are great!!

I flood tested a water heater today. Looked like the first pic when I started and like the 2nd when I ended.

Vacant house 35 year old tank. Was upstairs reviewing when I heard it go!!

Tested the floor drain too!!

Sorry I went off the subject. But when I read flood tested I just had to share today's fun.

Everyone was freaking out and I calmly waded thru ankle deep water and shut off the main.
