just starting out with the home inspctions. Had a question. Hopfully I dont sound to amiture I ran into a Propane firplace built in to the corner of a living room. No venting to the outside at all. Are there many Gas firplaces like this. I couldnt even find a place in the fire box for a vent to be installed. The same house also had a gas cook top with no vent to out side. sorry no pics.... Iam in NY and iam pretty sure they both need to be vented outside correct me if iam wrong

Ken...Yes there is such a thing as a vent free fireplace. They are typically a stand-alone unit.  Vented and vent-free are two different systems.

But... there is no such thing as a vent-free "gas cook-top"! (At least not that I ever heard of). Are you sure it didn't haver a "down-draft" system built in?

Jeff, what about recirulating, self cirulating exhaust vents for gas cooktops, do those count? :D

Is the fireplace gas or propane, is it vented or vent less.

If not sure take a pic of the manufacturer and model# and research in office.

Makes a difference with fuel type and vent configuration.
