TOPIC: CSST in bulkhead

CSST in bulkhead 13 years 3 weeks ago #39926

Came across this today; CSST run from exterior meter, through the wall and into a finished bulkhead with ductwork.  Should this be changed over to hard pipe due to the vibration of the ductwork when the furnace runs?

Yeah, I would at the very least recommend they protect the CSST from anything potentially abrasive.  I see it all the time running unsupported/unprotected on and through ductwork, concrete walls, etc.  It's not as tough as black iron so I call it out every time.

I believe some local codes may not allow it outdoors, and frankly, I'm not a fan of running it outside regardless of what the standards may be.  Too many homeowners send their teenagers out to mow and weed whip and usually they are texting the whole time and beating the crap out of everything in their path (Including the CSST which was "much easier to run than black iron.")

I can't see all of it, but that installation looks like mechanical damage waiting to happen.

Page 27 is also pretty good for protection requirements.  The down side is, this is just one manufacturer's specs and they defer to local codes repeatedly. From an inspector's perspective I would say "If humans can get to it, you'd better protect it."

There are no requirements regarding CSST in the 2006 IRC.  Have not checked the 2009 yet.

Google is your friend.  There are only about 3-4 major CSST manufacturers.  I bet you could find the other installation manuals if you spent a few minutes on the magic interweb.
