TOPIC: Duct, Duct, Loose

Duct, Duct, Loose 13 years 9 months ago #32734

When is heating and air conditioning an afterthought?

When it is installed by someone who is NOT a professional.  And without permits!  Flipper!

There was so much wrong with this HVAC register it was funny!

First, they totally forgot it until the end of the process.  By then they had installed so much other stuff to block access to this room, that they had one small opening available for a duct - right along the exterior wall!

The space was so small, the only thing they could use was a dryer vent tube.  And they chose the white plastic one!  It was poorly attached to the floor register cone.  At first I thought it was a dryer vent, which would have been bad enough.  But later, with a better grasp of the geography of the house, I figured out that it serviced the register you see here!

This room is 11x15'.  This duct, and register, is way too small.

It is beside the door!  Look carefully and you can see light coming from under the door.  There was no weather stripping on any of the four edges of the door opening. If that register cover is screwed down, it actually sticks out from under the door, on the outside!  No wonder there was no weather stripping under there!

They cut a hole in the wall (I think this room used to be the dining room) so this would be a "bedroom" with a private entrance...  from the front porch.

On that front porch, there used to be the tongue-and-groove porch flooring you are used to seeing.  Over that they laid 1/4" luan plywood and glued ceramic tiles onto that!  You can kind of see them through the door.  They are the slippery ones too!

This whole house is too cute for words.  And that is just ONE thing in ONE room!  It was a looong report.

My recommendation: Call a home inspector!  DON'T call Flipper!

Wow that's bad! But I like flipper. I'd recommend including it in future reports.

I don't see anything wrong with that!
I think installing a dryer duct near your front door to warm the feet of visiting guests is a great idea.
It'll be awesome when the first one visits - catches their foot on the edge and rips that thing clean off.

Dom, I had a whole post about flippers before!  That picture showed up there too.

Robert - I agree, floor heating works great!  And rips off a couple of toes at the same time!
