TOPIC: Glass Block

Glass Block 15 years 3 months ago #6283

Is glass block allowed as a side light next to a front entrance door.

I do not know if glass block is a tempered material.

Also from the Pittsburgh corning site......

Glass blocks are not tempered nor are they considered to be safety glass. However, because of their inherent strength and because the joints make the installation conspicuous and visible, all three model building codes list glass block as an exception under the glazing section of the codes that require tempered or safety glazing for those applications.

In other words, yes, the codes allow the use of glass block in door side lights, shower wall applications and bathroom windows when installed with mortar.

There is nothing sweeter than the smell of fresh cut grass on a baseball infield, the click of a wooden bat and the taste of a hot dog at a warm sunny daytime double-header.

Stephen's "installed with mortar" phrase is significant.  If done with silicone for exterior applications it is not considered strong enough.  Interior walls with silicone (I have seen it a lot in offices and as screen walls in houses) are appropriate.

The blocks, by the way, have a vacuum inside and if they break they implode.  I see them all the time as replacement bathroom windows and think they look great and work great.
