Chimney Condition 5 years 7 months ago #57649

Time for a new topic here.

What do you guys think of this and do you see a problem?

Good topic for discussion.

Go for it all, thanks.

Marcel, Any idea if that chimney was to be framed and boxed off, but never done? That would be my guess. CMU's are way too 'absorbant' to be left like that, as evidenced by the visible efflorescence.

I agree Jeff and that was noted.

Look at those straps. The two bottom ones had wood wedges to keep them tight and were anchored to the wood trim with 1/4" lags and the top wedges fell out.

The biggest concern is the horizontal crack in the chimney at the gable overhang.

Lack of chimney cap, possible freeze damage or foundation movement, I called for a Qualified Masonry Contractor to look at it and a chimney sweep to check out any interior damage to the flue lining.

Looks like they just wanted to make it pretty from the street.  :)
