It does change the look of the house though but so does rotten ends. It would protect the most vulnerable part; the end grain. I have seen them capped but that looks uuugly! Even the heat held by the logs isn't enough to keep it really warm...on the other hand, summer's can be very warm in log homes. The AC was running a lot today, and it was set to about 77!
