TOPIC: Ride along in San Diego

Re: Ride along in San Diego 13 years 1 month ago #39362

Thanks Dominic. Greatly appreciated. I am not a member of CREIA (yet), but in the near future I hope to be. I would still like to attend the chapter meeting, if possible. Any ride-alongs you can help with would be awesome. And Neil and I have been in touch to help each other out.

Thanks again,
Carlos

Yes you can definitely still attend chapter meetings even if you're not a meeting.

Neil & Carlos,
Just a thought, if you haven't already...

As you will find out soon enough, there are some obstacles that you will need to think outside the box. This may be one of them.

Every inspector out there, veteran to newbie, has their own level of knowledge, and due process. Have you guy's considered doing your own 'ride-alongs'? Meaning do a mock inspection of each others home. House, apartment, condo, shack, doesn't matter. It's all relavent. Work together, discuss what you see, and why you feel it's a defect. Discuss why you inspect one way versus another. At the end of both inspections, go have a brewski, and talk over everything. You may be surprised what you learn from each other.?

Don't forget to post here with any questions you come up with. There will probably be many. And when you do, trust me, photo's are worh a million words. Which by the way, the mock inspections will help to hone your camera skills. It's not as easy as it looks. Tip: when you take your close-up pic of a defect, also take a pic showing a broader view of the area. Building Science is about how things work together to form a whole. The extra pic will help us to help you!

I would think setting up a Mock inspection or gaining access to a vacant home, *then* asking for an experienced HI to consider shadowing or critiquing you would be good.

I wouldn't / haven't wanted to have a new inspector ride along with me, but am OK with the idea of shadowing.

Just a thought..

Tim & Jeff... Thanks for the great advice. I havent done a lot of inspections yet, but they will come. Inspecting is a tough business, but I like it. I take tons of pics, they do speak a 1000 words and refresh my memory when needed. And definitely, I will ask for help here. I would really like it, if I could shadow another more experienced HI, but the challenge would be to find one willing to do it. In a way, the ride-alongs I've been on, are more of a shadowing to me. And the other HI would get paid and still critique mt report. Of course, my report is for educational purposes only. I plan on doing shadowing and mock and "shared" inspections, as often as possible, to keep me on my toes.

Thanks again.

By the way, Tim & Jeff, I will be linking to you two by the weekend. I read a lot of your posts, you guys have great advice.
