TOPIC: Defective shower pan

Hi Fellas,

If a shower pan is done correctly it does not matter if there are cracks in the grout. There are a number of reasons why a pan can leak. Holes/or unsealed seams, wrong type of shower drain, or sides not high enough.

When you construct a pan, it is supposed to be filled with water and monitored for at least a few hours before tiling.

If anyone is interested, I have some step by step pictures of a pan reconstruction that can be shared.

Our County requires that they be plugged up and filled completely for 48 hours and then the County inspector stops by.

That's the way it should be, but that doesn't always work. I was doing a new construction inspection last week and the city inspector was there and did a bunch of checks, then wrote out the certificate of occupancy for the builder. He left I went into the attic and there was no insulation in the home.

Hey what do you guys use to inspect shower pans?  I was looking at this product.  What do ya'll think?

I just use a flat white drain stopper I picked up for about a buck at walmart. You just have to watch and make sure you don't over fill shower.
