TOPIC: Ventilation of gas kitchen aplliances

Ventilation of gas kitchen aplliances 13 years 11 months ago #32084

I don't think there is a reg which requires either free-standing or built-in gas ranges/ovens/cooktops to directly vent to the outside through an exhaust vent or hood, but I'm not sure-I usually recommend that they do whenever possible, and most manufacturers also recommend an outside vent, but I wonder if I need to provide stronger language or am missing a standard requirement--anyone know for certain?
Thanks,
DrBob

From what I can find, only commercial gas appliances would count. Though you could state that the manufacturer recommends installing a vent to the outside.

From the 2006 IRC
- G2447.2 (623.2) Prohibited location.
Cooking appliances designed, tested, listed and labeled for use in commercial occupancies shall not be installed within dwelling units or within any area where domestic cooking operations occur.

I wouldn't make the language any stronger than what you said.  It makes sense that commercial cook tops have to vent to the outside; they are operating most of the day.  A cook stove in a house is only on for 2 or 3 hours for cooking a main meal and for short bits of time throughout the day.

BTW, how do you know Dominic is taking time off?

Yeah Bert,
My post was supposed to be dripping with sarcasm about why somebody (named Dominic) would feel compelled to reply to an HVAC question on their birthday - hopefully he made time to collect his annual birthday present
