That was my thought exactly, even if it wasn't slate. How long of nails to you have to use to get it into some wood. I inspected a house with three layers but they still used regular size roofing nails. I could literally lift the roof off in sections.

The age of the slate depends on were it was quarried. Ribbon slate like the one most likely on this roof had a 50-75 life expectancy. There are some slates that can last up to 200 years.

The top roof covering is an interlocking T and the only placed it is fastened is at the ridge and flashings.
