Looks to me from the pic. that they pulled the siding upwards too tight and nailed too tight when they installed. Two basic siding no no's.

I was wondering what caused the defined line. Now that makes sense. Nice find Jay!

Dom - I think it was the angle of the sun, only certain times of the year, when the window reflects heat downward and onto the siding.  The angle from that window is the opposite of the exact angle of the sun in the sky.  There were two other houses with the same siding problem, but no window to reflect heat, so there was no defined line.

Drew - you're right.  It needs to be able to move.  If not, physics takes over and it moves itself.

Davin - I see melted siding from grills about twice a week!

Jay is there that much vinyl siding there. Here I see it a few times a week, but it usually is on the lower end homes. Just curious what people like to use in other parts of the country.

Most houses here are vinyl.  If there is brick, it is a facade and usually only on th front, or the lower front.

The most popular alternative to vinyl siding is James Hardie.  Not used often, only in higher-end homes.

Jay, the window manufacture in my case was Patriot, they have a screen and a retro fit for a full screen.
The neighbor allowed us to install on their windows, no more melted siding
You are correct about the loose nailing, but you have like it when they nail loose and install the nail at the very left edge of one slot and the on the very right edge of the next slot

Have a great day
Tim
