Basic Question:

Why is bonding the neutral to the EGC beyond the service equipment a bad idea?

The possibility of energizing the electrical equipment and associated (attached) metal components exists from stray or unwanted neutral currents exists.

Give Joe some time to answer. He's involved in a big project right now. He called me a few days ago.

Please forgive the delay, sometimes I am unable to gain access to the internet because of the weather, but now I can.  :)

I was happy with your reply, it provides a good answer in the form of a one liner that can be further researched by reviewing the NEC or NECH in Section 408.40
