Hi Dominic,

If I were to purchase a second domain name can that one open up my original website?? I am looking at "thewisconsinhomeinspector.com"
I would like to keep my original because of the money I have spent on advertising and supplies etc. Don't know if that makes sense.

Brian,

Yes you can forward one site to another. Google will only list the site that actually has the content. How long have you had your current domain name?

Ok, I only asked because of the age advantage. Id put your site on the new name and redirect the old to new.

Would it be a big advantage in switching to the new domain??

Not really. You already have the word home inspection in your domain name. Most people are going to type 'city home inspector.' People don't use states that often. I'd stick with the 2 month old site as the age will be just as helpful.

Hey Dom I've really been thinking of getting several other domain names (not all right now) and I wanted to find out what is better, .com or .biz?  I did a search for hlchomeinspections and both .com and .biz are available.  .com is more common and cheaper, but I was thinking that maybe I should stay with .biz because my other one is .biz and it would keep things simple.

I want something short so I can put it on my truck window and everyone can remember it with a quick glance.  Godaddy says HLC.com is already taken but then when it listes all the .whatevers (forgot what they are called) it says back order now for the .com.  What does that mean?

Extensions don't matter. Lots of HIP users are getting .biz because the name itself is extremely important. You REALLY want the word home inspections or home inspector in your domain name. If the majority of jobs are in one city, get that in your name too. Back order just means you put on a waiting list for the day that will never come where someone forgets to re-register the name.

If you're just looking for something on your truck, that's fine. Just make it redirect to your real site. Just don't use it for links online.

I'm thinking of getting in time the following links

oklahomahomeinspections
hlchomeinspections (wish i could get just hlc)

Others I could get

(city names)homeinspector
(city names)homeinspection

Point is, I want everyone who searches for a home inspector here in oklahoma to find me!!!

You'd have to actually have a site at each of those names. A totally separate site, otherwise there's no point. Redirects will never end up on Google.

Yes, that's why I asked a few weeks ago about the costs for multiple sites.  Its something I think I want to do in the future.

Gotcha! We have quite a few guys now with 2 sites and some working on their third. I think the fact they're  coming from places charging them 60 bucks a month makes it easier to justify.

Ya, I don't think anyone around here has more than one.  I think that would give me a decisive advantage when the rankings increase!

Its funny, I just did a search for HLC Home Inspections and everyone else's sites came up from my links.  The link page on my site came up in ninth place and my home page came up on the second page in the second spot.  The real challenge is to get them to come up with other searches!  I cant wait to see the fruits of our labors!!!  Cheesy

Thats the power of an older site (even if it's by a few months) and having more links. You'll move up there!

Hi Mike,

There's really no reason except to keep a competitor from buying it. It has no actual search engine optimization benefit to you. If you were to buy another domain name you'd be better off choosing one large city around you and getting cityhomeinspector.com
