It can be. Nachi excludes them from their standards. The presence of a screen, glass doors or both could be a good add.

Drew, I have a miscellaneous list for you if you can use it.

                                                                          NiFast Fire Safety

Every 15 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the United States. A residential fire occurs every 66 seconds. There is one civilian fire death every 118 minutes. There is one civilian fire injury every 18 minutes.

Fires are likely to start in many places in the home including the kitchen, living room, bedroom and storage areas such as, the attic, basement, workroom or storeroom. Causes of fire include overheated or overloaded electrical wire, cigarette ashes, smoldering ashes in the couch, sparks from the fireplace, unattended outdoor fires and barbecues.
Check the cords on all appliances. If they are worn or frayed.

Check for overload the outlets.

Make sure appliance cords are kept on the counter to prevent them from being pulled down by young children.

Check for storage over the stove. People get burned while reaching.

Check to see if curtains or towel racks are close to the stove.

Be sure a fire extinguisher is placed in the kitchen. Recommend a minimum 2A10BC extinguisher.

All cleaning products and other chemicals should be stored out of the reach of young children, not under the sink.

Be sure microwave ovens have room to "breathe," all the vents are cleared of obstructions.
Check for overloaded extension cords and outlets.
Check for extension cords under rugs or over hooks.
Are kitchen appliances – such as the coffee-maker, toaster oven, and microwave – plugged into separate receptacle outlets?

Does your family have a home fire escape plan that includes two exits, usually a door and a window, from each room?  Smiley

Are fire department’s emergency phone numbers listed and posted near a telephone?

Nothing yet Marcel. The last I heard they were having a meeting on 1/19 and discussing things. I haven't heard since. I have been real busy inspecting and working with this Inspection Support Network that I have now. I will follow up soon though. Cool

Drew, did you get that marketing letter Nifast sent through by email?

What do you think offering this type of inspection be worth?
Might put it on the website, but trying to figure out what kind of price tag it might be worth if done separately from the home inspection. Smiley

I believe everyone that's part of the NiFast program received the email.  I've gotten several calls from them as well, asking how things are going...they're looking for feedback as much as we are.
I posed the pricing question on another place here, but haven't heard anything more on it.

Dom, I'm not sure why the template won't save to HIP for me...I've tried it a couple times and it doesn't show up when I open the program.

That was one of my questions Casey, how much do we charge for this and should it be offered as an ancillary service or offer to do it at the same time of the HI. ?
If done at the same time, it would probably add an hour to the inspection and an hour of report time. If done seperate, would envolve an extra trip and/or done by itself.
Thanks

Marcel, I've been waiting to hear back from NiFAST with regard to changes in the scope of the inspection. I'll follow up with an email today. I wouldn't know how to price it yet myself.

I just received this email from NiFAST about 5 min. ago

Hi Drew we made changes to the inspector course based on inspector inputs and went over the SOP and came up with our plan We will meet early next week and create a draft which if you don't mind I will send to you for review and input

Thanks

That's great...having a good SOP will certainly add some validity to this.  I heard from them today that they'll be creating some more form letters for marketing to landlords and colleges, so that we can go ahead and do it instead of waiting for them to get around to our states.

Casey, save it to your desktop first. Make sure when you save it says .tpz and All Files is listed as the file type. IE has been changing file types on it's own lately. Then copy from your desktop to the Data folder in HIP.

I like the template that Drew created.  Very nice, and of course being HIP, easy to maneuver around and work with.  Any more word on what NiFast thinks of it?  Or the SOP idea?

Casey,

Nifast is reviewing and finalizing the SOP this coming week. I will reach out to Terry Flanagan again on Monday to see where he is at. I am leaving for a family vacation on Tuesday night. I will try to slip in an email if needed while I am gone. I know my wife will boil me in oil if she catches me. Grin

Thei decision to create an SOP is great for us. It will provie a scope of work and a list of do's and don'ts for this inspection. Let's hope they come up with a good one.

Drew,
Please do not let my impatience be the reason you boil!  Grin  Have a great vacation, assuming you can get to your destination...I hear some of Minnesota's snow has bypassed us and made it's way to you!

Here is a first draft of the NiFAST SOP. It is released for discussion only and is not official yet. Once we get it in a final form, I will turn it into an HIP template.

Please comment on the SOP. Tell us what you think is missing, or could be better. Keep in mind this will be a minimally invasive inspection. For example, you will need to remove a smoke or C/O detector to determine its age from the information on the back.

I just took a glance over the SOP, looks pretty inclusive.  I've got some questions/thoughts, but I don't have my NiFAST stuff right in front of me now.  Looks good so far, like it should be more than $100 for an inspection!  Wink

Wow! Very comprehesive SOP Drew.
Good job on that one.
First thought while reading, was, how in hell will I remember all of this?
Maybe this is one that should be in a check list format during the inspection.

Would look good as a manual too.

Thanks Drew, job well done.  Smiley
