Title: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on September 08, 2009, 01:46:53 AM
Russ Spriggs brought this to my attention. Same stats as the ASUS T91 but drop and water resistant and with a cool handle :D Check it out:

More info here: http://www.2gopc.com/ at the manufacturers site. It's actually built by Lenovo who IBM sold their laptop division to.

Just talked to one of the managers at the company. The CTL2Go actually has a 1.6 ghz processor versus the T91 1.3ghz process which makes it slightly faster for the same price. They are also in stock! I've asked them to mail me a unit to evaluate and they are going to see if they can. I asked to get it asap so I can take it to the conference in Vegas in 2 weeks so you guys can see it.

Yup, I guess I have a few tablets I'm waiting for now to test out! It's funny, it's originally designed for kids, but that actually makes it perfect for inspections. It drop & water 'resistant' and the nice handle makes it easy to carry.

Great
I am glad the handle is removable as it isssssss uuuuugly.

Remember to try active words software with these ,as it now has a special ink-pad feature made just for these tablets.

I called the CLT2go guys and the person that I talked to said in about two weeks they should be offering windows 7 instead of xp for the operating system. Also he said if I waited until Feb tey are coming out with a new version that is a little bigger. The downfall is the small keyboard, unless your that BK commercial guy. SO the new one will have a bigger screen and larger keyboard for adults instead of children(and the Buger King guy). I think I will wait until FEB!

If I got one of these, should I go with XP pro or the Home Edition?

John and Julian,

I'm looking forward to see how you guys like the CTL2Go, looks like it might be a nice tablet to use in the field, the handle seems like it would be real convenient to hang the tablet off your hip for a minute or two while you take some pictures. Anyway let us know what you guys like about it.

The tablet is very comfortable to hold. It also has the little security hole to attach a cable to. I was thinking of ways to rig something up that clamped onto your belt and the tablet about 2 feet long so if you dropped it, it wouldn't hit the floor.

Sweet. Let us know how you like it! Make sure to train the handwriting. I spent about 15 minutes on it and it works great now. It recognizes words so even if you completely screw up a letter it will look at the rest of the word and figure out what you're saying. It's great. Any box in HIP that you click on a little pen box pops open that you can click on then hand write the issue in (of course you can use the KB too).

Hi Guy's - I am wondering what the latest info on the ctl2go is ? I don't speak computer very well but have decided it is likely a cool device to use in the field and try to shave some time off the inspection report writing time. Has anyone started to use in the field yet? I am wondering if the 10" version is out yet and if that is something worth waiting for? I think that as I get older, the eyes just are not what they use to be.

Thanks very much

Jerry Spicer

From what I've been told the 10" won't come out until after Windows 7 is released in a few days. The screen size of the CTL2go is the exact same as the ASUS T91 which several of the guys have commented on how much time it has saved in the other tablet thread.

Post by: Julian Benton on October 18, 2009, 08:51:41 PM
I got mine on Thursday and will be using it for the first time in the field tomorrow.  I will let you all know how it goes.  So far I like the size, I think anything bigger would defeat the purpose.  Yes, the keyboard is small, but if I have set up my template correctly (I went through it this weekend to do just that) I should not have to use it much, if at all, during the inspection.

Thanks Dominic,
I think you also said the software we use can go back and forth from the small tablet PC to my Mac in the office. Is there much work required to get this tablet operational, remember I don't speak computer much! I will go and read the other threads as well, Thanks for the reply.

I am looking forward to hearing how it goes for Julian.

Jerry, it's very easy to go between the tablet and your mac. You just save the inspection to a thumbdrive on the tablet and open inspection on your mac.

Julian, train the handwriting recognition as well. It works great once you get it down. And unlike a PDA you can write on entire sentences rather than one letter at a time. You won't even need the keyboard for anything. Let us know how it goes!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on October 19, 2009, 03:06:56 PM
Yes, I did train the handwriting software, but it has crashed on me twice since then, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The inspection is at 2, and then I will have an idea as to how good it turns out to be.

Post by: Dominic Maricic on October 19, 2009, 09:12:12 PM
The handwriting software crashed or windows did? I used the handwriting software quite a few times and never had a problem. Have you installed anything else on the computer that might be conflicting with it?

How'd the inspection go?

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on October 20, 2009, 03:23:20 PM
The handwriting software crashed a couple of times at first but I have had no problems since.  I have not (and most likely will not) install anything on the tablet. My plan is to only use it to do the inspection, then transfer the inspection file over to my Mac to add photos, create the report and upload.  IMHO, that way I am not worried about loosing anything if the tablet gets damaged.  Also, the MacBook is bigger and thus easier to edit the photos.

Now for the review:

First of all, I found this at Home Depot to carry the tablet on my belt when I need both hands. It worked great yesterday especially since it was raining and it allowed me to keep the tablet under my duster and out of the rain when I was looking at the electrical panel. http://www.acetoolonline.com/BIGG-LUGG-2-PLUS-CLIP-AND-HOOK-PLUS-2-EXTRA-HOOKS-p/big-bl2-3bm.htm

During the inspection, I did find at that brightness (or lack thereof) of the screen might become a problem on bright sunny days, but then using bright white paper was a problem as well due the glare, so I figure that I will just start moving out of the sun when I need to.

This was the first inspection with the tablet, and it did take some time to get used to since I have been using a paper check sheet for a while now, but by the end I was getting the hang of it.  It is really no different from when I started using the form, which was different from the one used previously; just a slight learning curve and I will be up to speed.

The work done after the inspection was still about the same as before, but that was mostly due to me going back through the entire inspection to correct things I either missed putting in or typos due to still learning the handwriting software.  On that note, the ability to correct the text (after writing it in) via the virtual keyboard is pretty slick.  Once I get the handwriting trained properly, I should not need the virtual keyboard much, but it sure is nice to have for corrections.

Another thing that took extra time (but which will help in the long run) was me going through my template and making changes.  Before, I would have a lot of stuff that would require me to make a change to it for each inspection, e.g. "Tiles missing / broke / loose". I would just go in a delete the parts that did not apply; not really hard with a full sized keyboard and some typing skill.  Now with the tablet, I realized how much work that is, so I changed the template to have separate lines for each condition to allow for the easy selection with the stylus with no changes needed.  Sure I will have to make SOME changes for unusual situations, but that will be the exception rather than the rule.

One little annoying thing I did find about HIP when using the stylus:  If I made multiple selections in the Damage or Selection boxes, on the 2nd selection the program would open up an edit box for the first item selected. In other words it thought that I double clicked on one item instead of single click on two different items.  I am not sure if it was because I selected the items too quickly or what, but it happened a number of times.  Dom, maybe you could look into it?

All in all, I am happy with the tablet and once I get more comfortable with it I see a potential for huge time savings, plus I think the clients will have a better opinion of me than if I was walking around with a pen and paper; that is SOOOO 1990!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on October 20, 2009, 04:29:25 PM
Hey Julian,

Did you adjust the brightness when you were outside? As soon as you unplug the device it goes into battery saving mode and will decrease the brightness.

You'll definitely find that as you add in the narratives rather than changing them, you'll have a huge time savings. Same with learning the handwriting program.

I'll look into the double click. I changed the last version of HIP so that a double click was anything within .5 seconds. It's possible there's a bug that it's including the click from the item before but I think I would have heard about that by now. Try slowing down the single click to a second in between and let me know if that happens. I'm looking at that area of the code right now anyways because of an issues with one model of HP tablets that refuses to cooperate like any other tables.

You also want to look at possibly reordering your menus now that you're on site. You can move everything into one or two menus that mimic the order you go through a house. This makes things a bit faster. Remember it's the Report Settings->Section Colors & Print Order that sets the print order. The order within the program is just for you.

Keep us updated! How'd the battery life do?

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on October 20, 2009, 06:21:58 PM
Yes, I increased the brightness on site, which was fine for a cloudy day, but may not be enough when the sun is out.

I will try slowing down the clicking and see if that changes anything.

Yes, I had reordered a lot of stuff already, and tonight I will be doing it some more; along with adding more sub-categories.  For instance, I had originally had a category for Wiring (under Electrical) that included the Receptacles, Lights, and Switches.  That made for having to hunt for the proper description from a large number of items, now it is 4 separate categories (Wiring, Receptacles, Lights and Switches) which makes it easier to find the correct description as well as making the report easier to read, IMHO.

As for battery life, I didn't have any issues yesterday, but it was a small home so it only took me 2.5 hours.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on October 20, 2009, 06:28:06 PM
Of course making the report easier to read is definitely important, as is input speed.

Another option to creating more tabs, which you might want to use in some places is to separate out comments within a tab. So if you left wiring alone you could sort your comments by adding in separators like:

** Receptacle Comments **
receptacle comment 1
receptacle comment 2
** Lights Comments **
lights comment 1
lights comment 2
** etc.... **

Just another idea that I've seen guys use!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on October 20, 2009, 07:02:56 PM
I was thinking about doing something like that as well.  My first thought was it would be nice if I could make the text within the comment fields be different colors (but only be black or red when the report is written) to make it even easier to separate while doing the inspection.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: John Adrian Sopher on October 20, 2009, 09:28:34 PM
Something I did as well was separate stuff using lines.  It helped separate things visually for me.

Lights
---------------
Outlets
--------------
Switches

Hi Julian,

Nice review, thanks.

Keep us up to date on how you like your new Tablet. Sounds like its going to work out just fine. I like the strap holder you bought for it, did it flop around or was it secure as you walked around?

-Russ

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on October 21, 2009, 11:49:31 PM
I wrapped the strap around the handle a couple of times before securing it which held pretty tight. Once on the holder on my belt it moved a little but not much. The idea is to use it only when I need both hands free and for that it works great.

So, do both the Asus tablet and the CT2L have handwriting recognition software installed, or are you adding it after market?  I'm trying to find out if the HP tablet has it or not...failing miserably...maybe I should go eat some of my kid's candy!  :)

They both have it built in. Basically any tablet should have it installed. Note the CTL2go is .3ghz faster and the same price.

Gentlemen, I've been using the T-91 for around two months now. Being computer illiterate it suits my needs perfect. Glare is bothersome, I like to keep my hands free so I just sit on the counter, (neutral area)complete the area, add then move on. My inspecting time is still the same, it only takes 20 minutes or so to download & edit pics (which I go to Starbucks) then go to the next one. I do have a portable printer for the occasional times that need it. I'm not too concerned about handles or waterproofing, I work by the five P's, Proper planning prevents poor performance ;)
Happy Halloween,

Okay fellas here is my report on the 2goPC.

This past week I used it on several inspection.  The battery life was outstanding.  I never had any problems with the how long that thing lasted.  I did have the same problems with the display in the sun as everyone else.

The only thing that I am not crazy about is the hand writing software crashes all the time.  I had read online that it was notorious for crashing.  And thus, was thinking of waiting until Windows 7 comes out on this thing.  But I needed the time saver NOW!!!

Now for the good stuff, I went from doing 6 hour inspection including reports to 5 hours with my new template design.  Not bad for just a template redesign!

Now that I started using the 2goPC, my inspection time remained at 2 1/2 to 3 hours with about 30 min of pic upload and finalization.  That means I have gone from 6 hour inspection to about 3 1/2 hour inspections, depending on the SQFT of course.

I figured out this computer was making me about $50 per inspection by using it and should pay for itself in 10 inspections.  I wish I had gotten one sooner!!!

Strange, I haven't had it crash on me once. Did you give CTLCorp a call and ask about it? More than likely they have an update.

I'd say that saving yourself 2 1/2 hours is a hell of a time saver. I'm assuming you are finishing almost the entire thing on site now.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: John Adrian Sopher on November 02, 2009, 08:48:43 AM
Yes the only thing I don't finish on site are the pictures and proofing the report.  I think I could do that on site if I really wanted to but there is no point as I would still have to go find a WIFI to upload the report.

Seems the program crashes mainly when I close it up and it goes into hibernation mode.  Then if I open it back up and turn it back on, its crashed on me.  Also if I change screen orientation a lot, it will crash too.

And no I haven't called them, so far I don't use it enough to really be bothered by it.

2 1/2 hours is a hell of a time saver!!!!  I cant think of a better buy for my business at this time.  Getting into real estate has really made me focus on time, time scheduling, and time saving ideas.  I would recommend every inspector make this move as early as they can.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Julian Benton on November 02, 2009, 10:14:58 AM
I had the handwriting software crash a few times in the beginning but not since.  But then using your description as a guide:

1.  I don't close the unit up once I start using it.  I just put it in tablet mode and leave it.
2.  I turned out the "auto change" orientation since it was changing when I did not want it to.

Maybe that is why I am not seeing the same problems any more.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on November 02, 2009, 01:35:54 PM
I'd also make sure you close the writing program before it hibernates. A lot of programs have issues going in and out of hibernation. Julians right, it could be the auto rotate. You can manually rotate using the icon in the bottom right corner.

Last week I emailed CTL with a list of questions regarding the CTL2GO Tablet pc---last night I finally got a return email with answers so I thought I would post it here for those who are interested.

Robert,

I apologize for any delay in answering your questions, it looks like your HelpDesk ticket that you submitted did not filter to the correct department.  You will find answers to all of the questions below:

I am considering the purchase of the CTL 2GO Convertible Classmate PC 8.9" Laptop/Tablet with Hard Drive with Windows XP Home with an upgrade to 2 GB of Ram.

Please let me know what comes in the box-

Netbook, battery, AC power cord, stylus, and quick start manual.

Is there a car charger available?

Yes, there is an inverter that can be used in the card to power and charge this netbook.  You can find it on our website at this link: http://www.ctlcorp.com/v4/p-525-cyberpower-in-car-ac-adapter-deluxe.aspx

Does the extended warranty have to be purchased at the time of the original sale or can I purchase an extended warranty within 30-60 or 90 days after I receive the unit?

The warranty option must be chosen at the time of purchase.

I have heard some users are having trouble with the handwriting recognition program (it keeps crashing) is this a common problem and if so something that can be corrected?

I have seen very few people having this issue, a handful at most.  Every time users have this issue, it has been resolved by re-installing the software, which is located on our website for download.

I have heard of users having problems with the accelerometer not working properly and they constantly have to reboot their computer, is this on ongoing problem with the software?

This is an occasional issue that was happening with an older version of the driver package for this unit.  The Device Control Package as it is called, has been updated to a newer version due to this issue.

I have heard a 10 inch version of this product may be coming, if so when is that going to be released?

Intel has not yet released any information about a 10 inch model at this time that I am aware of.  I believe it may be speculation for now.  We are an Intel Channel Partner, and if a 10 inch unit is going to make it to production, they will be sure to make us aware of it.

On the website it states if I upgrade to 2GB of ram Microsoft Works 9.0 will not be installed-why is that?

This is due to Microsoft licensing issues.  The Ultra Low Cost PC License Windows XP Home license that you will find on most netbook PCs is offered by Microsoft at a small cost, but Microsoft governs what kind of hardware can be in a system such as this, and they require that it be a very basic system in terms of hardware.  In order to be able to upgrade to 2GB, your Windows license has to be upgraded to the standard Windows XP license, which has a higher cost, but allows for the freedom to configure your PC any way you want it.  Microsoft Works is included by Microsoft on the Low Cost licenses, but not on standard Windows XP licenses.

Will other versions of Windows 7 be available or just Windows 7 Starter?

Yes, other versions will be available.  Is there a specific version that you are interested in?  I would be able to provide costing and ETA for you.

If I were to order within the next few days when might I expect the unit to be shipped?

Typically, once your order has been submitted, it normally takes about four business days for your order to be custom built and shipped.  We build each order by hand, and hand test each unit as well to ensure that it does not have any issues prior to shipment.  This makes the process a little slower, but it is worth the extra time to ensure that you do not receive a DOA unit.

How would you rate your customer service on a scale from 1-5

We have a very knowledgeable and helpful staff, all the way down from management.  We hold an "A" rating with the Better Business Bureau, and we have always taken customer service very seriously.  We are always here to help, and you can call and get a live person on the phone right away to assist you with any questions or concerns that you might have.

Thank you,

Matt Kintz

Robert-
Thanks for doing this. It answers a lot of the questions I had. I'm confident in moving forward the purchase (I was waiting to hear about the 10" version. Don't have to wait any longer.)
Throwing a Karma your way for your efforts!!

Good detailed answers :)

Dont worry about MS Works. Just install OpenOffice, it's better anyways and free. Works has always been an excuse to get people to upgrade to Word.

I just got a new CTL2go yesterday.
My inspection software does not display correctly.
In talking to my software vendor, they said I need
to set the computer to a screen resolution of 1024X768.
The 2go only lets me choose 800 X 600 or 1024X600
on both 16 & 32 bit.
I tired to update the driver, but no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks

What software program is that? We made HIP to work with different resolutions as most 9" tablets are 600 high. Sounds like you're running something else. If they aren't willing to adapt to this screen size they'll be losing out!! The resolutions offered there are all the hardware can handle.

I am running SansWrite. Have been for years.
Runs fine on my 10 1/4" EeePC.
I have also found I don't like the touch screen on the 2go.
If you rest / bump your hand on it, it inputs.
Think I'll return it, and go back to the Fujitsu with the digitizer.
Anyone want to buy the 2go?

Hmm, must be something to do with the program. The way Home Inspector Pro works I haven't had any trouble using the CTL2go. I just took it on a trip to Washington for 5 days and used it extensively for browsing and working within the program without trouble. I'm sure someone else would be willing to buy it though!

I received mine yesterday, but instead of the 2 gb of ram I only got 1.  I paid for 2, that means I desired 2 to be installed.

Does anybody think I can make due with HIP and some internet surfing with just the 1gb?

Gary, I'd certainly take the issue up with them...that sounds like a pretty major gaffe on their part, especially if you paid for and wanted 2GB in your tablet.

HIP will run fine with 1gb (unless you like to take 200-300 photos) but I'd still call them and ask to mail you the 2gb and you can swap it out yourself (easy, one screw on the bottom) and mail back the 1gb chip.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go

Update: I called them and they said they would ship me the 2gb and I would have to send them the 1gb back which is fine.  But we also finished the conversation up with them saying I might have to ship them the 1gb before they ship the 2gb.  I guess we will have to wait and see.  I do have a question while I am here.  I am trying to install HIP on the 2go and the three choices to select are : Use evaluation version, load license, or buy now.  I already have purchased it but when I try to click load license it prompts me to search for a file.  I cannot remember if Dominic gave me the info for license or not.  Is that the procedure as far as getting the license onto the computer?

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go

Nevermind.  I see how to do license on tutorials.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go

That seems strange that they'd ask for the 1G back before shipping you the 2G, especially if you'd already PAID for it!  I might take a little exception to that fact and make sure they realize what you paid for.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go

Gary, if they ask you for the gig stick back first, just ask them if they can hold your credit card instead. Otherwise you're down a computer which is ridiculous.

We have been using the CTL2go tablet full time for two weeks now.  It is amazing and what a fabulous way to save time when you get back to the office or at home.

Most of the report is completed in the field and then only posting photos and proofing some of the entries.

Way to go Dominic.

I like mine too.  I start the report on my home system, take fill in information at the inspection, then finish it on my desktop.  I only wish the tyoe in HIP could be a bit larger and/or darker - pretty hard on my old eyes.

Update-  I have called the ctl2go company 4 times about receiving the 2gb chip I have already bought and paid for.  The first 2 times they seemed decent to deal with but the last few times I have not received any results.  They said they shipped out a chip and they said early last week they would ship out another chip but I have yet to see one.

I guess next time I will purchase from a different company as this seemingly simple issue cannot be resolved >:(

A side note:  I bought a HP470 mobile printer off ebay.  Does anybody have one and is there any problems to watch out for?  Also was wondering about an extended warranty through 'Square Trade', a warranty company highly touted through ebay.  Anybody have experience with them or do you think an extended warranty is even necessary?

Thanks for the feedback!

How did the CTL2go work out Dominic? I'm about to purchase a new computer. Thinking about this unit instead of a tablet or lap top

Yes 1.6ghz is the standard speed. You just need the base model. No need for upgrades unless you like taking a ton of photos in which case I'd get the extra gig of ram.

Dom,

Just wondering if you could answer a few questions about the tablet.  I am going to buy one, but am wondering about the differences in Windows XP Home vs Pro, or if Windows 7 would be better.  It seems that Windows 7 is easier as far as networking--what do you think would be best.  I am going to use it for inspections.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the boards ;)

XP Pro is for businesses so the computer can join a domain. You definitely don't need that!

Windows 7 is a better system but if you're just using the CTL2go for inspections I don't see a reason to spend the extra $100 on it. I'd rather see the $100 go into extra ram to make the computer zip along. If you don't mind spending the extra $100, go for it! It has a little better handwriting recognition as well (as it's built in).

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go

Hey Dominic,
So would it be better to get the extra ram or just go with the 1.6 it comes with? I'll be using the CTL2go for home inspections and for excell spread sheets on heat lose evaluations.
I've called those folks 2 times and never hear back. Is there an extension I should be trying other than#223 - Matt Kents?

Tim, send your emails to support@ctl.helpserve.com and you'll get a quick response.

The gig of ram upgrades the ram from 1 gig to 2. The 1.6ghz is the speed and is something separate.

For you folkks that are using the CTL2go, how do you get along with the 8.9 in screen? My last tablet had a 12 in screen and I liked it.

I have a couple of questions on the CTL2GO:
How is the screen in daylight, is it readable in the outside sun?
Is it alot of bang for the buck or would it be better to spend the extra money and get say a Fujitsu LifeBook?

Thanks Rick

Richard: The guys I've talked to have said they've had no problems except in the most direct sunlight where they will just take a few steps into a little shade. If you turn the brightness all the way up that's probably not even necessary. For 1/3 the cost of a LifeBook I don't think you could find a better value.

Tim: Sorry, I was responding to a few posts ago when you were asking me about an alternative to Matt Kents at extension 223.

Nick tablet. Let us know how it works! It's the same speed and memory but has an inch larger screen (which means larger keyboard) which is nice and comes with Windows 7. Battery life looks great too. Only reason I'd still choose the CTL2go is that it's built for kids and is extremely sturdy (hard shell, handle, water resistant). This sure makes a great competing device though!

Dominic:
The reason it sold me was the bigger key board and screen--I type fast and will use this to edit my template.
That and the battery life, ten hours is awsome!

Tim I'll let you know. Pc conncection express has  been impressive. Not only did they beat any other price by $50 they didn't charge shipping or tax. And, the other prices had a four cell bat. this was an eight. They said instock and ship the same day and that they did. It arrives Monday. I'll let you know how it works, but pc mag. rated Levono as some of the top ten netbooks and tabs.!

Tim, any tablet that can burn CD's is going to add size & weight. It's best just to buy a USB external hard drive or cd burner (pretty cheap).

Rick, sounds great. There was supposed to be a 10" CTL2go out by now but I haven't seen Intel announce it yet.

I am using the olympus stylus 850sw.  Water resistant, dust resistant and shock proof.  There are more expensive "tough" cameras from olympus but for what we do it is fine.  To clean the lens you actually submerge the camera under water and turn the power on and off.

Got mine at BJ's for 125.00.  Absolutely love it so far.

For those who have been following:  After nine phone calls and 4 weeks I got through to Steve, someone in the purchasing department.  He did some investigating and found out that several mistakes were made on my order and that is why I did not receive the 2 gb of ram.  He was very sorry for the hassle and priority shipped the 2 gb chip to me.

Now my next question:  How to replace the chip.  There are no screws directly in the back but there is what looks like a removable piece of plastic with what looks like a small tab to stick a screw driver in to remove this 'L' shaped plastic.  Could someone confirm if this is the area I should be focusing on or is there something else I should be doing.

Thanks all.

Hi Gary,

I posted a few back that I talked to Matt and he said he had 2 gigs mailed out to you a few days ago. I also listed their Live Chat and Support Ticket which is definitely the best way to contact them (Live Chat is great). Maybe you'll have 4 gigs now :)

I'll take a look at my CTL2go when I get home, it's usually very easy.

Getting ready to order the CTL GO but may check out the Lenovo  now that Rick mentioned it.
As far as cameras go my Sony DSC T300 is the sh-t.

Everyone wonders how I get such sharp pictures and it has a writing touch screen for notes, fast switch to video along with audio that is killer for music.
The video still shots I use are as clear as most cameras.

Durable enough to fall off a roof last year and avoid the Nikon touchscreen unless you like grainy pics.:)

Ordered the CTL GO  from BJ's and they called to say it will be shipped in a day or two.

Thanks for the information on BJ's.  I too was having a hard time deciding on which hardware platform to choose, but the CTL 2GoPC seems to make the most sense.  So I bought one.  $399, no tax and $10.75 shipping.
Being new to the business there are so many decisions to make, hardware being just one.  Software is another and the more I look at it, HIP seems to make a lot of sense particularly in combo with the 2goPC.
Does HIP run ok on just the base hardware configuration? ie 1 gig of ram?  The box can be upgraded to 2 gig, would you recommend this?

Thanks,  Ken Sherman

1 gig is fine if you are not multitasking.
OK for HIP from what I read.

My suspicion is after a while you may start using it more and wish you had the two gigs.

Lets face it , in another year we will want the next tablet.

My order did not officially start till they corrected my address this morning ,so I wonder who will get it first. 8)

LOL. Well there's a new version coming out in 4 or 5 months with a larger screen but the price will be back up to $499 or $599. I love the little thing and take it with my often. Haven't heard any problems and for $399 it pays for itself extremely quickly via all the time you save on inspections.

Hi Gary,

I just looked. There are two screw covers on the back near the XP sticker. You can pop those out easily by pushing on one side of them with a small flat head screwdriver. Use a philips to remove the two screws. Then you can pop the old ram out and put the new one in!

Glad to hear you've bene so busy! When you get a chance click on Profile above and enter in your location and your signature for your website.

This handwriting recognition that it talks about, does this mean that you can write on the touchscreen and it types in the info that you're trying to report? Also, are people having an easy time carrying and reporting on this computer throughout the inspection?

Good enough. Get a color laser printer from Costco. Much cheaper to print, and MUCH faster. Just plug it into an inverter and you're set to go.

Ed, everyone that I've heard from so far has said it's greatly cut down on their reporting time. Many of the guys now finish on site (might leave the photos for later). It's definitely worth the $399.

The CTL2go is .3 ghz faster (1.3ghz vs 1.6ghz), the CTL2go has the handle to make it easier to carry and is water resistant and has a much harder shell for protection. Other than that they are pretty similar.

Post by: John Adrian Sopher on March 16, 2010, 07:39:06 AM
Okay I talked to the manufacturer and they said they think its a bad cable.  They will fix it because its under warranty, but here is the rub.  They say they try to have them done within 75 working hours.  That comes out to 10 days on an 8 hour work day!!!!  I cant go without this thing for 10 days.  They do offer a rush repair service for $100.  And they only return ship ground unless I pay for faster service.  And they don't offer loaner computers.

So, if I want to get this thing fixed I have one of three choices...

1) Do my inspections like I use to and spend 5-6 hours on it. (This is not really an option)
2) Pay for over night shipping both ways and the $100 rush fee (Don't feel I should have to pay this extra $100)
3) Go on vacation for 10 days while they fix my computer. (This is the busiest time of year)

I think I may just have to suck it up and pay the money to get it fixed faster.  I figured this computer has saved me ~ $1200 in man hours just in the few months that I've had it.  It has paid for itself 2 times over!!!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on March 16, 2010, 05:14:07 PM
You might get it fixed quick, it just depends on what is actually going on. They have to build in time for their to be more serious problem that they'd have to order parts for. I'd still hope they'd fix it in 3 business days and ship it back. 10 days is definitely a bit much.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: John Adrian Sopher on March 16, 2010, 09:00:42 PM
They said it would only take a couple of hours to fix it if it is the cable.  The time was dependent on how many computers were in for repair pipeline prior to mine.  And he couldn't give me a better estimate than the 75 working hours.   :-\

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on March 17, 2010, 01:05:08 AM
Yeah, sounds right. You don't want to promise someone same day and it turns out to be a more serious issue.

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: John Adrian Sopher on May 01, 2010, 02:58:19 PM
Okay, here is the latest:

I shipped my 2gopc overnight back for repair, paid $100 for rush repair service, and paid for overnight shipping back.  They got my unit, repaired it and didn't ship it back.  Apparently they don't get FedEx everyday.  Long story short, they gave me my rush repair money back and shipped me the computer back overnight Saturday delivery.  I paid for the shipping but they paid the difference in the Saturday delivery.

Got the pc back and used it 3 time and the screen goes white on me at the beginning of my forth inspection.  Good thing I had my everyday computer with me!

After a nice phone call to them from my wife, I shipped the computer back again, overnight, and they put my HDD in a new computer and sent it back to me.  So now I have a whole new computer except the HDD.

Now I say this computer has made me tones of money by saving my man hours. But this lil problem has cost me about $1000 in lost jobs plus all the shipping.  I think it would have been cheaper for me to have bought a new unit and sent this one back for repair in the normal repair pipeline.

Woof...that's a pretty spendy fix.  The lost time is just so hard to deal with too.  There's no amount anyone can put on that, unless they're willing to pay your standard fee!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: Dominic Maricic on May 03, 2010, 04:10:27 AM
Sounds like they fixed the issues, how long did it take to get it back? Why did it cost $1000 in lost jobs? Did you have to turn down jobs because you didn't have it? I don't get why they can't send via fedex every day, hopefully Matt will chime in.

It is always smart to have a backup machine and this would prevent you from having to pay for the overnight shipping, so you're right, getting a 2nd unit isn't a bad idea!

Title: Re: A New Tablet!! CTL2Go
Post by: John Adrian Sopher on May 03, 2010, 07:42:43 AM
Yes I had to turn down work.  First time I sent it in on a Tuesday and should have had it back on a Thursday.  But due to the shipping delay I got it back on Saturday.  The second time I sent it in, they got it back very fast!  And I ended up using my personal PC for the jobs I already had booked.  My personal PC is a HP zd8000.  Its very bulky and very little battery life.  It did slow me down quite a bit but I got through.

Lesson is, I should have a back up for all my critical tools.  Anyone looking to sell their 2gopc?  ;)

I have several questions about how others are using this device in the field:

1) Do you use it in tablet mode or in standard laptop mode? I had a problem with the Accelerometer where it flipped the screen when in tablet mode but wouldn't flip back when in laptop mode. Had to reboot to get it working again. Anybody else experience this?

2) Do you find that sun reflection is a problem in either mode? If so, have you found a solution?

3) Do you actually carry it with you throughout the exterior inspection or do you update it once you're back inside?

4) How about adding new narratives?  Use keyboard? Use handwriting recognition?  Any recommendation on how to add new narratives quickly and accurately?

Bottom line - I'm curious about how others are getting an advantage from using this machine. My first few times using this machine have been very frustrating. It may just be my approach.  Any usage tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks,  Ken

Post by: Dominic Maricic on May 03, 2010, 12:11:44 PM
Hi Ken,

1) If you're using the 9" version there's a driver update on their site to make the Accelerometer work better. But in the bottom right there's a program you can right click on (looks like a blue box) and can rotate in any direction. You can also flip it back to tablet mode in back and that resets the Accelerometer.

2) Make sure you increase the brightness using the Fn key plus the sun icon up in the F keys (don't have mine in front of me, I'm talking along the top of the keyboard). When you unplug the device it automatically decreases the brightness to save battery live but you can override this.

3) I was at 2 conferences this weekend and we talked a lot about the device and quite a few guys had them. Almost all of them carry it around except for the roof & crawlspace.

4) Handwriting recognition unless it's after you've come down from the room, then guys will have it sitting in tablet mode and type in everything they just saw.

Make sure you've calibrated the touch screen and gone through the handwriting program so that it recognizes your writing better. Also, any word it comes up with that's wrong, click on the word under your writing and select the correct phrase.

I would be happy to explain.  I dealt with this issue directly with John, so I can speak to it.  I handle our RMAs as well here, so I was aware of the situation from the get-go.  I hand picked John's 2go out of our pile of receiving, and took it to our repair department.  This is not the normal process, but I know these units are important to every inspector, so I wanted to make sure that the unit was put in the front of the line, since it was a rush.  The repair was taken care of shortly after, and the unit was taken to shipping to be packaged up and shipped out.  The shipping department did not notify anyone that once we schedule a pickup with FedEx, it takes them 2-3 days to actually pick it up, even if it is an overnight!  This is because we do not normally have FedEx pickup, as we ship daily with UPS.  FedEx drops off to us daily, but they will not accept any pickups when they drop off, which I think is odd.  I can't tell you how many times I have chased a UPS truck down the street to throw something on it at the last minute as it was pulling away from another business in our area :)

Long story short, when I found out that it was still in the shipping department, I did everything I could to have it delivered Next Day, hence the Saturday delivery.  It was the only option available since this was brought to my attention on Friday.  Then when the PC had another issue, I authorized it for a replacement unit, because I did not want John to keep having issues like this, so it was a safety bet.  I had the swap the hard drive to minimize the downtime, so that all the needed software would be on the machine, as well as the data.  That way John could be back up and running as soon as he received the unit back.  We took care of the return shipping via Next Day Saturday Delivery.  I sincerely hope that this unit continues to perform as it should for as long as it is needed!

I remember the ZD8000 series from when I worked in retail.  They are more of a laptank than a laptop, so I feel your pain.  I apologize for the issues you had with the initial repair, I am just glad that we were able to take care of the issue in a timely fashion the second time around.  If you need a great deal on a 2go 8.9", let me know, I still have a few!

Matt, thanks for getting John a new unit.  I'd definitely see if you guys can set things up where you call FedEx and they come pickup those overnights. I showed off the 10" at 2 events this weekend and everyone loved it.

John, make sure to print out a copy of your report and laminate it for reuse. That way you never need to turn down a job!

Dom,   As always thanks for your insights on how to get the most out of the tablet.

I guess it's just a matter of getting used to finding the narratives, adding the unique findings and equipment details and keeping the inspection time at a reasonable duration.  This was the problem my first few times out. That's why I became frustrated. I finally resorted to a paper checklist the last time out. It helped me keep the inspection time where I wanted it to be. But then the back end report creation time was a lot longer than I wanted.  I guess I just need more practice and it's a matter of balance.

You're trying to get used to the software and the tablet at the same time which is what's making it more difficult. You see John Sophers post awhile back on how it was saving him hours. That's because he was used to the program. Do a mock inspection or two at home, make sure to rearrange your narratives so the most popular are at the top and you'll be good to go.

Anyone looking to sell their 2gopc?  ;)

I definitely will buy another to have as a backup in the future.  I think this computer is perfect for my needs.  In hindsight, I think I should have just bought a new one and had you ship that one to me overnight.  Then I wouldn't have been in such a rush to get the other one fixed.  If you ever get that other unit working correctly I might consider buying it at a discount!!!  ;D

It will probably be quite some time before we see it again.  They normally have to be shipped off to the production factory for recertification. I mentioned earlier that I have a few of the 8.9" models left that I can make deals on, but I forgot to mention that they come with a full warranty, and are like new.  They were used in an education cart for demo for a couple weeks, and were never removed from the cart.  I believe there are about 10-11 units like this left still.

I have a few questions about the 10" computer

First, how does the screen do in the sunlight. I know a regular laptop is not visible
next overall how has it performed for anyone using it
third, where is the cheapest place i can find one
and last, is anyone using homegauge with it and what are the results (sorry Dom)
Any feedback would be apprecitated, and I just cant weed through all the posts to find them

Sean, I think I'm the only one with the 10" as they just started shipping them May 1 (Matt sent me a pre-production model). A few guys might have just gotten them. I know it runs fine with 3D as we tested it at the AII confernece Sunday. I'm not sure about HG as of all the side bars that are needed. Check with HG and find out what their minimum resolution is.

Don't worry Sean, I forgive you ;)
