By the way,  My name is Tillman Brown. I'm a new guy from Lake Norman,, North Carolina. I've read many of the posts here and they are quite informative. Glad to be here!  Smiley

Back to the question. I've taken much heat by calling these out.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

I call them out. In my mind I consider it a safety hazard especially with children present.

Welcome to the boards Tillman. I would keep taking the heat. It is a clear safety issue. Cool

I agree. Manufacturer states they should be installed anyways so at the very least you would say not installed to manufacturer specs.

Welcome Tillman!  It depends on the year of manufacture and installment.  And, frankly, I don't know when the stops became necessary, viable, utilized, recommended, important, looked for or even cute.  But, they are always a good idea...

Look at it this way. Pots of boiling water and fry pans of hot oil on stove top, kid opens oven door and stands on it and stove tips over. You can imagine the rest. I always call it out because I do not want to get that call of look what happened to my kid, because you didn't tell me this was necessary or even available. And if your getting the heat from agents....put a pot of water on and have them stand on the door. ;-)

I call them out all the time. It seems like only 1 out of 100 stoves have them on properly.

There was a claim against Sears I believe in regards to anti tip brackets.

How would you feel if you did an inspection and did not call it out. A year later you receive a call that a small child was injured or even killed. I could not live with that on my shoulders.

It cost 5 bucks if they need to purchase.

Yes, call 'em out.  I also advise of the Sears suit, to re-enforce that they're needed.

How do you guys check for these?  I have never heard of these until now.  I had to look them up online to see what you were talking about. Do you tilt them forward or something?

Yes, a bit.  Once you find one with them on, you'll know.

If you tip it, the device will catch on the range.  The best way to check is to look behind and see if the bracket is bolted onto the wall.  You can also slide it out about an inch.  I would not slide it all the way out as sometimes they fit into a special slot and they can be a dickens getting it back in properly...

I open the oven door, put my foot on the door and hand on the back of the unit.  It will tip quite easily.  It should move about 2" to 3" and stop.  I also point out the OEM safety label located on the oven door and or frame.  CPSC and the OEM thinks its a safety issue, that's good enough for me.

Don't forget to remove loose contents from the cook top surface and oven interior prior to tilt test....

One time I turned on the oven and started talking, casually looking inside.  This family used the oven for cookie, cracker and cereal storage!  Yikes!  Quickly taking out the stuff, I tried to just as casually act like that was normal...

I have checked thereafter before I turn the oven on.  Lesson learned...

This is a huge liability! You really better put this in your report. If anyone criticizes you, you can forward this video to them:

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/04/06/hunter.stove.tip.over.cnn?iref=videosearch

(There is a commercial up front, but watch the whole thing)

I would not be alarmist about it, but absolutely you should be checking this. It is a part that only costs a few dollars and is very easy to install. It may seem insignificant, but do you want the liability of a kid gets hurt?
