I am doing a lot of inspections on foreclosures. Some are very nice. Some are horrific! You don't hardly want to touch anything in the house. There are times I will not take my bags of stuff into the house (tools, computer, printer) for fear of bringing something home. Instead I just take in the tools I might need and go back to my truck to get something more if needed. In the event that I don't do the report on site, I tell the clients I will do the report later and email it, or go to the realtor's office afterward and do it there with everyone present.
Even if you aren't doing foreclosures, do you sanitize your hands? I sometimes eat something between inspections and wonder what I am also taking in! I have a good hand sanitizer in the glove compartment and use it right away. How about you?

Ya, so far I don't really have to worry about eating between inspections. I'm still trying to get one inspection a week here!

I always use the hand sanitizer. Sometimes more than once per inspection.

I keep a bottle in the truck and I should use it more often--no is my answer Jay. I will now though--you bring up a great point regarding foreclosures...me too. Lot of them.
John, don't dispair brother. One a week is a great goal. I hoped at first for one per month. Earlier this week I had none, then the phone rang and I got one, then two, then three. Tomorrow is four, Sunday is five, Monday is six. The I have no idea. Save when I can, work when I can (and when the phone rings). When I'm not inspecting, and since the pool is closed :-) I spend time on the computer working SEO. I joined the Chamber of Commerce and gained a couple inspections from that network. Joined Kiwanis because it's fun and probably will get a few inspections from that. So, the inspections will improve. Be ready! And when it happens, hang on!

My daughter is just finishing up her degree and becoming an RN. She has worked in a pediatric doctor's office for a number of years. She tells me stories about the doctor's office and things I can pick up and I have heard her. MRSA is the worst, and very serious.
I bring it up also because we are creatures of habits. We often touch our eyes, nose, mouth or eat something in our trucks. Who knows what is in these houses. I go into houses that are so frightful, I will not take my stuff inside! Then I am expected to test (touch) everything! Yummie!

I have 3 bottles at any given time and pass it out to my clients as well for thier own comfort after inspection just another complete service item, along with a cooler with pop, water, juice for kids and a few treats.

You're the bomb William! Great job! I had never thought about bringing a cooler along!
Often clients bring me stuff (which often I don't want, but appreciate the gesture) for which I thank them profusely. It begins the relationship in a good way. Good for you!

Jay the way I look at it is this, you give an in in extra service, and you will get a mile of pleased clients, I eat the treats when i need too, and drink the drinks so they stay fresh, so I loose nothing because there really for me but the offer is always made to the clients. Now if I could hook my espresso machine up and a small table and chair.....
but like you have said in other messages, give the best and do your best and it all pays off in the end

My wife is an RN and has told me about some nasty things that can be out there. She bought me one item for my business and it was 2 bottles of Disposable hand Sanitizers.

RN's see it all and seem to know what is going on out there...
Once I took my daughter to the doctor for a flu* shot and while there the nurse asked me if I had had mine. "No..." "Roll up your sleeve!" She gave me one right there!
Then it was woohoo to the truck...
* Shouldn't home inspectors get fluE shots?

John - look at the spelling - fluE - meaning chimney flue...
Sometimes my humor is very dry. You have to look closely...

You should always practice safe inspecting, so wash afterwards. I enjoy a cigarette after.

When I eat after an inspection its mostly fast food. So I go in use the facilities and wash up. When I cant I use the sanitizer that I carry.

I'm a stickler for nasty homes, so I have disposable gloves at all times. Even for occupied homes I usually wear them. I was inspecting a bath last week, the tub and toilet in their own room. I turned the light on, closed the door and about blew my lunch when I saw the back of the door. Crap smeared all over the back of the door. Yes this was the kids bathroom. There are some nasty people out there. You never want to inspect a foreclosure and then head to the chicken wing joint directly after, without some major hand cleansing!! lol
