While not a statistically sound sample, I was interested in knowing how our collective backgrounds shake out as regards our current HI pursuits...
If you fall into the "Other" category, let us know how!
Please, everyone vote - there are many drive bys who look but don't add comments. At least vote, thanks!

Already two "Others" and we don't know what that means...
I can add a category to make the "Other" category a bit more clear. Lemmino!

I was in construction from birth! :-) My father and five brothers owned a construction Corp.
I was a special agent for the Department of Defense, conducting criminal investigations to include construction fraud for 13 years.
I worked as a diagnostic engineer in HVAC systems design. I made things work in the field when it wouldn't perform "out-of-the-box". Specialty areas like hospitals, museums, computer manufacturer clean rooms etc. that need specialized psychometric requirements of air was my forte.
I broke my back and was out of work for a year and a half. I started doing home inspections as I recuperated, as a paid favor for a family friend who went into real estate sales in the wintertime and found air conditioners not working for her clients when spring rolled around. It takes time to get a home inspection business off the ground, but I had the time because I couldn't work anyway! I now have 99% referral business. The more work I do, the more work I get.
My back is now fine! Things to flare up from time to time and it is a godsend to be able to work for yourself and not have to meet your employers requirements.

Wow, David, so which box do you check!? Like most of us you have a varied background. I could check three boxes myself. Eleven years ago I fell off a roof and shattered everything in my left leg from the knee down. Got up and hopped on one foot for the rest of the inspection, and then drove myself to the hospital (clutch truck) which kind of hurt... Good that you are fine - backs can be a bear I understand.
My brother lives in Old Hickory, near you I think. They've been there since 1980 or so.
And, you may come to my house at any time for a paid eval of my HVAC!!
Be a good neighbor...

For me I worked in the chemical industry for 14 years. Started out with Kodak when I lived in Rochester, then I got transferred to Eastman Chemical in Tennessee. I have always been in the construction trade though, as my time at Kodak and Eastman was mainly shiftwork. So I only worked 14 days out of the month, and that left plenty of time to run other businesses (carpentry, home building) on the side. I started inspections in 2001 in TN, and moved to Atlanta in 2006 and took on inspections full time. To say the least, it was the best move I ever made.

Hmm ok here goes, started in 1989 as inspection diver and marine construction, contaminated water diving. in 2000 I started with a commercial construction firm project manager and supervisor along the way the compant sidebarred into residential (mostly due to lack of good companys) and I then did the same there, from swing hammers, tape and bedding, layouts, HVAC, Plumbing, interior steel walls, drywall, electrical ( when the lazy sparkys would not show up) to finish out. I was always checking out propertys for friends and family and 2007 I formally started my company and did my own business. here we are and loving every miniute

Wow contaminated water diving, that doesn't sound like fine! The marine inspection diver must have been interesting though. There actually is a guy using the program for boat inspections. I don't know if he dives. From what I've heard boat inspectors get to take the boats out for a spin for the day, nice gig

I guess I'm the new guy around here. I haven’t even done my first inspection yet. I started out in the Navy as a Sonar Tech on Submarines. After I got out I eventually found a job at a metrology lab (fancy word for industrial test equipment calibration lab). Worked there for 9 years. During that job I put myself through collage, got an ABA and started towards a BBA in finance. I got into rental property and vending machines. I got tired of working for someone who didn’t have an honest bone in his body and quit. After sitting around and enjoying my new found freedom/vacation, my money started running low and I decided to try home inspections. I have been talking with my fiancé about running her own translation/interpreting business in the next year or two. As you can see, I love business. And I said all that in one breath...

Haha. I know Greg Scheer just retired as a U2 pilot, Billy Boerner is actually in Iraq right now and quite a few other guys have stated they were previously in the service.
So what's it like living in a sub for long periods of time?
