I went to a 3 hour seminar presented by Mike Crow.

A lot of the topic discussion on report writing was the reverse of what I am doing.
Onsite vs at home, Checklist/combination vs Narrative, length of report, pics, report verbiage, ect.

Anyone here ever go to one of his events of use/pay for his materials?

The marketing stuff was decent but he seems to target realtors.

I was looking at his sample report and I must say it is not very detailed, but he is in a licensed State and has to utilize there form.

Mike has been around a long time and is very successful at what he does.

I've read some of his stuff and watched a few clips on the web, but that's about it.  I haven't ever read or heard him say much about the actual inspecting or reporting, in fact he seemed to go out of his way to say that he is NOT about teaching that stuff but instead he just focuses on marketing inspectors.  He clearly has a big marketing machine for his marketing seminars so he must know his stuff. I would love to hear what he said about inspecting and reporting.

I know some people will verbally whip me for this, but I don't do much marketing anymore.  I have a decent presence on the web, but I just haven't needed it other marketing. I get so much referral service that doing some of the marketing stuff he and others talk about would take away time from doing inspections.

I would say the most important words in your post Dave, were: "target realtors".  If that's what your market calls for to succeed, then Crow's stuff is golden.

If you follow at least part of what Mike teaches, your business will improve. I've traveled with im quite a bit and heard him talk half a dozen times. I've also seen his dedication when he's doing his dream team meetings with inspectors via the phone at 6am. Like any tips though, you'll agree with some of it and embrace it and other stuff you'll do your own way!

I do like what he says about sending appreciation notes and just being appreciative in general.  People do go out on a limb when they recommend another person for any service.  Being thankful is a good practice.

Hey, I searched around and found a page with some of Crow's recorded interview where he sits down one on one with inspectors and talks very specifically about report writing. I really didn't know he spoke on this stuff. It's still from the viewpoint of doing the report quickly and making money but the few I've listened to had some good ideas about phrasing of comments and even some contract ideas.  Here's the link:

Thanks Dave for posting the topic. Dom is right, you can glean good ideas and improve your business from many sources.
