Home Inspector Pro Software / Beta Testers & New Feature Discussion / New Request for cover page
|

Information that is loaded in the "client info" goes onto the cover page. Size, weather, name, and Realtor info etc, along with your company info and logo. One additional item is the Realtor.
I chatted with Dom a bit over this the other night and decided to add it here for comment and as a wish.
Personally I don't want the Realtor's name or information to show up in my printed report. As far as I am concerned, they are not a party to the transaction between me and my client. I get along great with them, I just don't find it necessary to have their name in the report. BUT, at the same time, I want the Agent information to be loaded automatically into the Agent section of the software for marketing purposes. If I just load it into the Agent section, it does not show up in the background info of my report. It would like it to be like a picture you don't use in the report but is still there when you pull up the report within your HIP program. That way, I can always go back to a specific inspection and find out who the agent was.
So the initial idea I had was to have a box next to the Agent's name that would be to Print or Not Print depending on whether it is checked or not. Then I looked at some of the other items in the client info and thought it would be a good idea to have the same type of box next to each item that would normally go onto the cover page. It would also give us a chance to add a lot of other items to the client page that would could pick and choose what info is printed. It just gives us another option to customize the cover.
What are your thoughts?

My grandmother did that for all of us grandkids. Worked great.
Now to further the thread for those that have a bad cough but aren't otherwise sick. You know the type of cough. Starts cause you swallowed wrong or you just got a quick cough that turned into one of those can't stop, ear popping, chest hurting deep coughs.
Drink a coca-cola. Not a pepsi. Not an off brand cola. Not a diet cola. It must be a regular Coca Cola. Don't ask me why it works, but it does. My mother went into a coughing fit at costco. Couldn't stop. A clerk brought her some water. Didn't help. Finally a nice man came up and said, "please drink this Coke". He saw what was happening and bought one at the vending machine at the front of the store and brought it to my mother. She started to protest but he calmly said, "trust me, my son is a neuro surgeon and he told me it works everytime. I don't know why, it just does." She drank the Coke, not a sip but the bottle. The cough stopped. We all just stared in disbelief. I now carry one in the trunk of my car and have used the trick twice now. Worked both times. Weird stuff.

I was one of the first to vote for Dom.
But how many of you really support him? I mean REALLY support him. You can vote for him all you want. You can sing his praises all you want. You can post all sorts of nice things about Dom, his software, his web hosting, his credit card stuff.
But there is only ONE THING that will show Dom that you truly support him and HIP.
YOU MUST SEND HIM COOKIES. Not store bought crappola. But HOMEMADE COOKIES. At least a dozen. Two dozen is better.
You must understand that techie nerds thrive on snacks. You know the typical geek. Diet Coke and Cheetos. Well Dom is not your ordinary techno geek. He is the Master of Techno Geeks (Although you wouldn't think this by watching his fantasy football teams)
Like the original vampire...... Dom has unique properties and wants. COOKIES are his plasma.
So get off your fat butts and start baking. SEND DOM COOKIES. And send something unique. No chocolate chip or oatmeal. How bland. We must help Dom expand his horizons. My tuna & molasses are on their way.

Home Inspection Questions / Electrical / Re: Panel Question
|
on: October 06, 2009, 11:27:20 PM

I have to disagree with this statement "The correct way to determine the available amperage is to determine the ampacity of the lowest rated of the following components". For Example if you have a 2/0 copper SEC, which is for 200 amp service, and a 100 amp panel, it is still a 200 amp service, not 100 amp. It is also unsafe, and should be reported as such. The SEC, breaker, panel, meter panel should all have matching ampacity.
As an HI, you know that a 2/0 can carry 200 amps, but you have no way to tell how much is actually coming in from the electric company, you have to assume the amps is what the SEC can safely carry. So a 200 amp SEC in a 100 amp panel can cause the panel to overheat.
This information is quite incorrect Michael and is no more unsafe than screwing in a 60amp light bulb in a fixture rated for a maximum 100amp bulb. To clarify, I am talking about the PANEL rating not the disconnect. If the panel is rated for 100 amps and the SEC is rated for 200 amps and the breaker is 200 amps and the meter is 200 amps, then the panel can overheat. It the panel is rated for 100 amps and they install a 200 amp breaker, that is the first defect to point out. Oh wait, that's right. If I need more power, I just add a bigger breaker, right? Sort of like my bank account. I can't be overdrawn, I still have checks.

Home Inspection Questions / Inspection Discussion / Re: Here's A Flash - No Deck Flashing!
|
on: October 06, 2009, 01:39:39 AM

Jay,
I had a similar thing happen. New construction. LP Siding. No flashing and deck lag bolted directly to the siding. I called it out and the builder didn't like it. Ended up calling the AHJ (imagine this.....he was a friend of the builder) who said flashing is not required and the installation was fine. I told the buyer that it was my opinion that the installation was wrong and it was up to him to decide what he wanted done. Sale went through. They caulked the top deck board / wall junction to keep moisture out. LOL.
So it still burned my butt after a few days. I called the County AHJ, and the State Association of Building Officials. Got all the phone numbers and called each of his colleagues from every city and county in Western Washington. Took me about 2 weeks. Everyone of them said it was an incorrect installation.
I took that information, along with a number of articles from the Deck Industry Association, diagrams like the one you posted along with some others, and walked it in to the Head Building inspector that I had talked to . I also took some photos from three different inspections with the exact same installation and rotted siding. The oldest was 7 years old.
I left the whole packet on his desk and told him that when this home had rotten siding and the deck fell off rolling down the steep embankment with the wheelchair bound owner, I was going to let every newspaper, radio and tv station in the area know that he was the one that personally approved the installation of his builder friend even with all the available information.
Got a call from the buyer about a month later. Seems the builder contacted him and wanted to "fix" the deck. Builder spent 1 1/2 days, slowly took the deck off the home and installed the newest spacers at each lag bolt.that would leave 1/2" gap between the siding and the ledger board to allow for drainage.
I smiled. Your story made me smile one more time.. Thanks.

Dom,
I am still laughing after our conversation this afternoon. I did everything to the kids computer to speed it up. It worked on every other computer. Why not his..... Until you asked me how much RAM he had, it never entered my mind to check. I mean I only built it 8 years ago. OK, so he upgraded from Win98 to XP. Runs iTunes at start up. Cmon now, 256MB of RAM is enough for anybody, right? LOL.

Yeah, but I don't remember the whole thing. It was a worm of some sort. 4 days of wondering if I would lose everything. I keep my computers updated pretty well but this just showed up out of nowhere. Middle of a late night...... just after chatting with you..... hmmmm. Now that I think of it, it was just after I kicked your butt in fantasy football. hmmmm.
So what are you going to download to my computer this week?

I used AVG for a long time until I got nabbed by one nasty virus/worm that it did not detect and even after updating, could not get rid of the program. It attacked the registry, boot sector and just about everything else. AVG, no help. Avast, no help.
What did get rid of it and has kept my computer clean from virus and spyware is PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus. Cost was $39.95 and was licensed for 3 computers. Just enough for my 2 laptops and tablet. Quietly runs in background with auto updates and most important, IS NOT a memory hog.
Free programs are ok, but if they don't work, they are exactly worth what you paid for them.

That is just a basic example, you get the picture I am sure:) The new home inspector licensing law will allow for inspector's to either be a SPI or not. Inspector's will be able to identify but then must defer to a licensed pest person.
Rob
Rob, Point of clarification. Unless you have your SPI license you cannot "identify" anything except wood rot. If there are termites, beetles or ants you may not specify what type they are, even if you know because you had your pest license at one time. You can only say "wood destroying insects" and must defer to someone with a pest license. Giving a specific type without your pest license will be a violation of the state pest laws and subject to fine.

General Discussion / General Discussion / Re: How do you feel about the Nachi board
|
on: March 27, 2009, 01:55:45 AM
|
You are correct Jeff. After being an active poster over there since 2005, I have weaned myself away from that board and only made 6 posts in the last month and those were all about WA state legislation. The name calling and attitudes just got to be too much. Instead I have started posting here and over at another site that Dom does the techie stuff for, http://www.your-leaking-house.com/sites/your-leaking-house.com/forum/ You are invited over there for any help you need, or would like to offer. It is a friendly message board and the problem attitudes do not and will not exist over there. Most of the best and informative posters from "Club Nick" have migrated to that board. This site is not competing with this HIP board but can be used as a supplement. Give it a try. Steve
