I have started adjusting a template for basic single-family residential inspections. I realized either I am not using the program effectively, or I need to make some major template outline changes. For example, I want to be able to go room-by-room and detail each one individually including its bathroom, closet, etc... With the templates available, there are general categories. I find it hard to believe this is easier and more detailed to have a general category and then specify the location in your comments. I realize the templates are just starting points, but I think I need to make some serious and time consuming template changes. I was wondering if people had an opinion as to how I could effectively used the available templates without major template changes. If anyone would like to share a template design that would be greatly appreciated. I wish I had a design to offer as a swap, but I am just getting starting in the business. Thanks for anyone's input.

Hi Mark, The basic template provided is setup for simplicity. Only 20 tabs for three bathrooms, not 6, only 3 pages on he report, not 1. Its easy to change this though. With the last basic version you'd have to copy sections semi-manually. With the latest you can go to edit template, tap on bathroom and click copy, and call it guest bath. Basically duplicating a section in seconds. This is a beta version but very stable and has beed in use by the beta tsting inspectors for 3 weeks now. Close the program and download it at http://www.homeinspectorpro.com/inspectionreports/trial/HomeInspectorPro-2_5_9_2-Update.exe

I appreciate your response. I was hoping you would see my post. I shut down HIP and downloaded the beta, but it gave me this message... Error opening file for writing. What did I do wrong?

Are you running the mac or windows version of the program? If windows, make sure the program is closed and run the update again, some file must have been stuck open.

Windows. I will just shut down the computer a restart. I tried three times already. No worries. I write back ASAP because I have some other questions if you have time.

It downloaded with ease. I would like to set up the template with each room as its own unit, therefore having its own tab forits specific bathroom, windows, floor, walls, gfci's, etc.. Maybe its overkill, but it will help serve as a reminder as I go from room to room. Any short cuts will be greatly appreciated. We'll talk later.

Glad the reboot worked. All you need to do is add Room 1 on the left in the templated editor, use the copy/move button on the right to move tabs you want to room 1. Once that's done you can click room 1 and click copy as many times as you want. Double click Room 1 to rename it whatever you want. If you don't need a room just uncheck it from Repot Settings-Section Colors and Print Order.

Mark, If you need some help, I can send you a sample template. It is not room by room by no means, but may help as a pattern.. IF you need one just email me, 1bskelly@msn.com

Thanks Ben. Nice of you to offer your assistance. Hopefully we can get people to help out with the Commercial template. Once that's done the we can build other templates for everyone to use.

Thanks Bob. I realize that the best way for me to become proficient at my reporting is to take the time to customize my report and cater it towards the SOP of the State of Maryland and interNachi. I would still like to see how others organize theirs just to get ideas. I have no intentions of using someone's form outright. I like the ownership of making my own complete form, but learning from others is a valuable resource. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate the help.
