I've started to get the ball rolling on adding a new feature to the report hosting. This will allow you to check a box within the report noting that the client has not paid. When you upload the report this will prevent the client from being able to view the report until they pay for it online.

Please let me know what features you'd like to see integrated with this. Do you think a client would ever come to you later and pay so that you'd need to come onto the site and unlock the report for their viewing?

More than likely it will come towards the end of January as there are a few other higher priority issues, but the groundwork is being laid out now.

I still have not tried the upload feature, I guess I'm stuck in my emailing ways.
However, I have considered tying in with Paypal or something, for those out of area clients who may be on the flaky side.  So far (5 years), I've only had one bad check . .

You have 3 months free of the upload service, so at least do a few tests on your own info to see if you like it. I like your idea of allowing the email to be customized and added it to the LONG to-do list.

I may try it.
Just like the NACHI upload, though, I don't see any advantage of it.  If I email, I know it got there, there's no sign-in or download for anyone, doesn't cost anything, people reply to my emails, etc.
I can't see any advantages, but I'm willing to listen!

There's a few reasons people use the service. First it's a marketing tool to real estate agents. They get to view all reports you've done for them for 3 years which means they don't have to keep hard copies, they can just log in and view what you've allowed them to view. It's also centralized so it's not like they have to keep it on their computer or in their email acct. Makes them happy and refer you again.

It also gives YOU a backup for 3 years (might become 5 actually) so that all your reports are online in case your computer crashes. It really doesn't make us a lot of money as some guys do 2-3 reports a day = up to 600-1000 a year x 3 years x 1-2 meg file size

It's also simple for some people since you can upload the report from within the program rather than switching out to email.

As we add more features to it, it will become more appealing too.

I have received about 6 checks in the last month that have no funds in the account or have been written on a closed account. I think we are heading into new times. I have been doing this for 9 years now and in the last 8 years I didn't even have that many bad checks. I will be using that system very soon.

Ouch that stinks!!! I do think that the fact you're near Los Angeles and Russ is in Idaho has a lot to do with the bounced checks. People out here aren't exactly the most honest people.

There is probably some truth to that (unfortunately).  Also, concealed carry is not only common, but a way of life here.  Very few people mess with little old ladies that carry a .40.

Helps raise the honesty quotient . . .

I would not upload the file until I was paid. This would be no different if I were preparing a written report. - Thats my 2 cents

I'm sure some people would go that route too. The nice thing here is that you'd actually sign up with the credit card merchant so the money gets deposited to your account directly. Plus it becomes an easy way to accept credit cards without buying hardware.

Dominic, if you can post the CC details soon - even if they are not incorporated into the structure yet - I'd like to see them.  We are looking into either Paypal, a local CC merchant, or something for 2008, & time's getting short.

Also, NACHI has a recommended CC merchant, as another option.  So, we're looking . . .

I'm still working on finding the best rates. I'll be contacting the NACHI credit company too. I'll let you know as I narrow it down.

Regarding the upload feature-

OK, before I could commit to this, I'd need to see a progress bar to know something is happening.
I sent CALHOUN today . .  after I did my normal email delivery.  Have no idea what happened, if anything.

Also, another field:
Also send report to (separate email adresses by comma):
Because I always send to myself & Jeanne, along with client & agent, to make sure it went out.

And, of course, the ability to include an editable cover email, such as:

We appreciate the opportunity to conduct this inspection for you!

Please review your Inspection Report in its entirety.  Be sure to call with any questions, and watch for the my next issue of Home Hints eNews – I’ll email you a copy!

CALL US

After you have reviewed your emailed report, so we can go over any questions you may have.

FOLLOW-UP:

When the inspection is completed and the report is delivered, we are not done.  I am still available to you for any questions you may have.

ANCILLARY INSPECTIONS:

I am lab-certified to perform mold, radon, meth and other testing services, should you require them.

REFERRAL REWARDS PROGRAM:

We appreciate your business, and know that you will come in contact with others who will need a home inspection.  Pass the word of our services and we’ll send you $20 when that lead develops into an inspection.  Make sure they mention your name; this will be an easy way for you to earn your inspection costs back.

Thank You!

Yes, the progress bar is a must. I need to rewrite the upload though as the current method won't support it. Did you get a message at the end that said upload sucessfull? Log into the website and click on Inspection Reports and see if it's there.

I was using the wireless card, waited for 45 minutes, finally choked it off.
Connection probably dropped but, without a bar, I'd never know.

I'll try again when that rises to the top of the "Honey-Do" list!

If the connection drops it should have thrown an error though. Try it from a landline rather than a cell tower. I can only imagine that the upload speed on the wireless is pretty slow too.

Wow, after 2 weeks of research I've found a huge range of prices. It's not easy to find a company willing to waive monthly charges, monthly minimums, start up charges, have no contract as well as good prices. So, this brings me to a question for you guys. While I am going to continue researching other options with banks, would you be opposed to having the option of using Google Checkout, or Paypal as your processor? Your client would not need an account with either, they would just enter in their credit card information and pay like normal. The difference is that you need to request through your Google/Paypal account for the money to be transferred to your bank account, or request a check from them. Using a normal credit card processor would mean the money would be deposited into your account the same or next day.

Why would I choose Google/Paypal? Because as of right now they give you the best rates by far. In fact I even looked into what some of the other inspection software companies are getting for their users and it's still better. From what I've seen the other inspection programs are paying from 2.2%-2.6% + .50 per transaction. On a $250 job, that equates to $6.00-$7.00! If we went with Google checkout, they charge 2% plus .20 which would mean $5.20, which is a $1-$2 savings per inspection. If you're doing 2 jobs a day that could be around $60 in savings. It actually could be more as some of the other vendors banks had extra charges for different types of cards.

There's another perk. If you use Google Adwords, then you pay NO CHARGES for up to 10 times your adwords budget. So if you spend $300 on Google adwords in a month then you wouldn't need to pay any payment charges on $3,000 worth of credit card processing.

So, what do you think? Even if I can find a bank to give all of you a good rate, I might go through the extra effort of setting up Google/Paypal as an option anyways. Would you use them?
